From Barton to BA

Ryan has just completed his flight training in Florida with the BA Speedbird Pilot Academy. Ryan did his PPL(A) with LAC, which was the springboard into his commercial career. Ryan tells us the application process requires dedication – about 5 months with a couple of trips to London, sometimes setting off at 4am for an interview.

“I’ve wanted to become a pilot since I was 7.  To 7 year old me, pilots were the greatest people around – they still are! In February 2020, I took my first ever flying lesson in a Cessna 152, taking the first step towards fulfilling my dream. My PPL(A) gave me the BA opportunity. Removing the cost barrier of flight training is a huge step forward in the industry, and this opportunity helps me get one step closer to becoming the pilot who lets the little boy into the cockpit, and sparks a new love for aviation”.

Jo’s GA Journey

After a trial lesson in a PA28 sparked a love of aviation, Jo achieved her LAPL at Barton Aerodrome with LAC flying School in 2024 upgrading to PPL in 2025. She also completed her night rating at Blackpool Airport and is currently working towards an IRR rating. She has enjoyed exploring aviation, including many cross country trips with her husband and a trial aerobatic flight with North West Aeros at Barton. One of Jo’s most exciting flights was over the Alps and Courchevel from Annemasse in a Robin DR400.

“I’ve really enjoyed my GA journey. Having learned to fly at LAC I’ve felt like part of the family since day one, helping me through licenses, skills tests and now with further training. I now have a share in a PA28 at Barton which I use for cross country trips around the UK.

In future I hope to build my hours, experiences and add an aerobatics rating with some tailwheel experience. I’d love to be an instructor. One day I hope to be a flying doctor in the Australian outback, or perhaps fly a dog rescue aircraft in the US. I continue to build my GA experience as Secretary of the BWPA.”
